The friction we remove.

Small daily chores and large, time-consuming jobs alike. With the right system in place, much of it can be automated.

Off-the-shelf software adds friction of its own: features you pay for and never use, options you have to wade through, screens that don’t fit the work. We build narrow: only what the business needs, nothing it has to work around.

  • Typing the same order in twice
  • Paying for features you never use
  • Reconciling spreadsheets by hand
  • Building the weekly report from scratch
  • Twelve settings for one simple job
  • Counting stock with a clipboard
  • Chasing payments by email
  • Clicking through screens built for someone else
  • Copying prices between systems
  • Matching invoices to deposits
  • Five apps for one task
  • Re-entering customer details
  • Exporting, cleaning, re-importing
  • Training staff on software that doesn’t fit
  • Printing pick lists by hand
  • Waiting on support for a tool you didn’t choose

Already running

In production today.

We have run these businesses ourselves. The software was built to run them, and it does.

NovelOps

  • In daily use

Runs the operations of NovelKeys, an online keyboard retailer, end to end: picking, packing and shipping with scan checks, inventory locations, and designer royalty payouts.

Could become

  • Designer royalty tracker: designers linked to products and rates, with payout statements made automatically.
  • Box-aware shipping rates at checkout: the box chosen from product dimensions, so shoppers see the real rate.
  • Bin locations and scan-to-count inventory.
  • Longer term: the full fulfilment suite (pick, pack, label).

Daystar

  • In early use

Field operations and point of sale for a working farm: a map of the land, the day’s jobs, and a market register on Square with pick tickets.

Could become

  • Market register with pick tickets, for any seller on Square.
  • Farm-stand storefront and price board: online ordering with pickup.
  • Longer term: the field map and daily jobs, for other farms.

Our approach

Local work finds the problem. Products scale the answer.

  1. Work inside one business and find the friction.
  2. Build the fix, then find the part other businesses would pay for.
  3. Turn the part with wider use into a product and sell it nationally.
  4. Use product revenue to fund the next build.
Software built for one business becomes a product for many.

First product

Rally: group pre-orders for Shopify.

  • In progress

Shoppers see a goal on the product page. When orders reach it, every buyer gets store credit back automatically when the campaign closes. The store never holds card charges or absorbs refund fees on cancellations.

Sample numbers

250 sold · $0 back on each one

250 more to reach the first goal, which unlocks $3 back on each one.

  1. MOQ-rebateBuilt inside NovelKeys, an online keyboard retailer, to run its group buys, paying the volume saving back as store credit.
  2. Split outOther stores run group buys the same way, so we split it out: each store kept separate, in its own currency and timezone, with its own billing and a progress bar on the storefront.
  3. RallyThe same idea, for any Shopify store. Now being made ready for any store to install.

Passion projects

Some solve problems in our own lives, the way our client work does for businesses. Some are just for fun.

Ledger

  • In daily use in one household · a future product

Household finance in one place: every account synced, spending sorted, goals with real progress, projects with their own budgets and shopping lists, reimbursements tracked until they’re paid back, and plans for big decisions, like selling a house, worked out in scenarios before you make them.

Steward

  • Self-hosted · in daily use

A team of AI assistants that runs on your own computers and does real work: to-dos, groceries, scheduling, email and files, asking before anything it can’t undo. It also improves itself: it finds its own problems, writes the fix and ships it.

Free to run yourself, if you’re willing to set it up. A hosted version, for people who would rather just use it, is planned.

Soft Peal

  • On the App Store · one-time unlock

Physics machines (pendulums, gears, bells) that play synthesized notes. For iPhone and iPad.

View on the App Store

Cork

A shared family board, with an app for each age.

  • Closed beta

In Hand

  • Approved · pre-order now, releases 25 October

A multiplayer trading game. Each player holds one item and trades up through eleven tiers over a season.

Like Rabbits

  • In development · art to be commissioned

A party card game about matchmaking rabbits. They multiply. You score.

Each round you draft rabbits, couple two of them up and pitch the match to the table in ten seconds. Every spark between them is a baby, and babies are points. 120 cards and a full rulebook, designed and playtested with simulations.

Solitairy

  • In development

Klondike solitaire as 1994 shareware, on an old amber monitor. It plays honestly at first and turns strange the more you play.

Every copy is different. Each install gets its own serial number, and that copy’s game is generated from it.

Where we work

Proud to be based in West Virginia.

We start with the businesses around us, close enough to work alongside the people who use what we build. The goal is simple: help them thrive. The products we make from that work are for anyone.
